Amethyst necklace to celebrate a new baby in February

2 min read

I’m very lucky to work with a lot of extremely thoughtful and caring husbands who do amazing special things for their wives.

John is a fantastic example of such a man. When he asked me to design a necklace for his wife Katia to commemorate the birth of their first child, I was thrilled with the opportunity to make a custom piece for them.

Goal: Create a light and airy necklace centered around a large gemstone with a nod to nature and linear architecture

He had already found a large amethyst he wanted me to use. Their son was due in February so it was fitting to use the birthstone for that month. Armed with the purple gemstone and other elements that were expressions of their interests, I got busy designing.

I drew inspiration from several key elements. John and Katia love to explore and go mushroom hunting so I wanted to incorporate their love of nature into the design. In addition, an interest in geometric shapes and architecture along with a desire for a piece that would appear light and airy and linear were incorporated. We also discussed adding some smaller blue gemstones so I sourced ethically mined and cut Montana blue sapphires to add to the necklace.

I made the necklace with a combination of techniques, including hammered wire, welding and soldering fabrication, and stone setting. All in all, it was a fun challenge to create something light, organic, and wearable, starting only with a large purple amethyst gemstone.

Here’s what John had to say about the project…

“Catherine created a wonderful custom piece of jewelry for us. She took the time to get to know us and crafted a very personal piece reflective of our hobbies and Northwest nature (working flexibly around a stone I provided). Highly recommend Catherine’s artwork, jewelry and custom work.”

I love knowing John and Katia will always have this visual memento to remind them of the happy first moments with their son Johnny.

Another great reminder that the objects in our lives serve a bigger purpose than decoration.

Objects we cherish are tokens of love and connection.
